Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as
Vinayaka Chaturthi is a prominent Hindu festival, celebrated across the country
with great devotion. The day marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is a symbol
of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune.
Ganesh Chaturthi Festival Dates
The festival takes place late August or early September, depending
on the cycle of the moon. It falls on the fourth day after the new moon in the
Hindu month of Bhadrapada. In 2020, Ganesh Chaturthi is on August 22. The
festival extends over 10 days with the biggest spectacle happening on the last
day called Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on September 1, 2020.
Importance of
Ganesh Chaturthi
Lord Ganesha holds a special place
in Hinduism. Any puja, havan, or auspicious work is incomplete without their
praise. Some new work begins with Ganesh Vandana in Hindus. This is the reason
that Ganesh Chaturthi, that is, the birthday of Lord Ganesha, is celebrated all
over the country with full enthusiasm.
In Maharashtra Konkan and Mumbai
this festival is made on sight. Not only on Chaturthi, but the birth
anniversary of Lord Ganesha is celebrated for a full 10 days i.e. Anant
Chaturdashi. Ganesh Chaturthi not only has religious and cultural significance
but it is also a symbol of national unity.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had
started Ganesha worship in public to promote national culture and unity during
his reign. Lokmanya Tilak resumed the tradition of celebrating this festival as
a social and national festival after the unsuccessful revolution of 1857 to tie
the country in one thread.
The 10-day Ganesh Utsav did the job
of shaking the roots of English rule.
Story of Lord Ganesh / Ganapati Bappa
Shri Ganeshotsav is celebrated with
pomp across the country. Sriganesh is the son of Mata Parvati and Shivji. There
are many stories about his birth.
There are different stories about
the birth of Vinayaka in Varahapurana and Shivpuran.
► According to Varahapuran, Lord
Shiva created Ganesha with digestive elements. When Lord Shiva was making
Ganesha, he found a unique and very beautiful form. After this, the news came
to the gods.
When the gods came to know about
the form and uniqueness of Ganesha, they began to fear that it might become the
center of attraction for everyone. Lord Shiva was also aware of this fear,
after which he enlarged his stomach and turned his face to the elephant.
► At the same time, the
story in Shivpuran is different from this. According to this, Mata Parvati had
applied turmeric on her body, after that, when she removed the turmeric from
her body, she made an effigy from it.
He later put his life in the
effigy. This is how Vinayak was born. After this, Goddess Parvati ordered
Ganesh to sit at my door and protect her, do not let anyone come in.
After some time, when Shiva came home, he said
that I have to meet Parvati. Ganesh Ji refused on this. Shivji did not know who
these are. The two got into a dispute and that dispute took the form of war.
During this, Shivji took out his trident and beheaded Ganesha.
When Parvati came to know, she came
out and started crying. she told Shiva that you had beheaded my son. Shivji
asked how could this be your son. After this Parvati told the whole story to
Shiva. Shivji while celebrating Parvati said that okay I put life in it, but
one needs ahead to live.
On this, he asked Garuda Ji to go
in the north direction and bring the head of whichever mother had slept back
towards her child. Garuda Ji kept wandering but he could not find any such
mother because every mother sleeps facing her child.
Finally, an elephant appeared.
Hathini's body type is such that she cannot sleep facing the child. Garuda Ji
brought the head of that baby elephant. Lord Shiva attached it to the child's
body.
He poured life into it. Named them.
In this way, Sriganesh got the elephant's head.
"It is described in Shri
Ganesh Chalisa that Mata Parvati meditated hard to get a son. Pleased with this
tenacity, Shri Ganesh himself took the form of a Brahmin and gave him the boon
that the mother will give you a divine and intelligent son without conceiving.
Having said that, he became impatient and came as a child in the cradle".
► There was joy in all four
worlds. Lord Shiva and Parvati held a huge celebration. Goddesses, gods,
tigers, Gandharvas, and sages from every side started to see sages. Shani
Maharaj also came to see.
Mother Parvati urged him to walk
and watch the child. Shani Maharaj was avoiding seeing the child because of his
vision. Mother Parvati felt bad. He cried to Shanidev that you did not like
this festival, did not like the arrival of the child.
Shani Dev hesitantly reached to see
the child, but as soon as a little sight of Saturn fell on the child, the
child's head flew into the sky. The atmosphere of the festival was transformed
into weeds. Mother Parvati became worried.
There was chaos all around. Soon
Garuda Ji was asked to bring a good head from all four directions. Garuda Ji
brought the elephant's head. Shankar Ji attaching it to the child's body and
pour life in that. In this way, the head of Ganesha was the elephant.
Where is Ganesh
Chaturthi Celebrated?
The festival is widely celebrated in the state of Maharashtra,
where it originated as a public festival in the city of Pune more than 125
years ago.
Although there is debate over who started it there (Sardar
Krishnaji Khasgiwale, freedom fighter Bhausaheb Rangari or freedom fighter
Lokmanya Tilak), its main purpose was to bring people from different classes and
castes together to unite them against the British rule.
The idol at Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple in Budhwar Peth is
very popular and historical. Celebrations have spread to other states
including Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
One of the best places to experience the festival is in Mumbai. It
takes place in a special way at the towering Siddhivinayak temple, situated in
the central south Mumbai neighborhood of Prabhadevi, which is dedicated to Lord
Ganesha.
An incalculable number of devotees visit the temple to join in
prayers and pay their respects to God during the festival. Also,
around 10,000 statues of Lord Ganesh are displayed at various locations across
the city.
The procession and immersion of the statues on the last day are
epic! Here's what you need to know about the Ganesh festival in Mumbai.
How is Ganesh Chaturthi
Celebrated?
The festival begins with the installation of huge elaborately
crafted statutes of Lord Ganesh in homes and podiums, which have been specially
constructed and beautifully decorated.
Artisans put months of effort into making the statues. It's
forbidden to look at the moon on this first night as legend had it the moon
laughed at Lord Ganesh when he fell from his vehicle, the rat.
On Ananta Chaturdashi (the last day), the statues are paraded
through the streets, accompanied by much singing and dancing, and then immersed
in the ocean or other bodies of water. In Mumbai alone, more than 150,000
statues are immersed each year!
What Rituals are Performed
in Ganesh Chaturthi?
Once a statue of Lord Ganesh is installed, a ceremony is
undertaken to invoke his holy presence into the statue. This ritual is called
the Prana Pratishtha, during which a number of mantras are recited.
Following this, a special worship ceremony is performed. Offerings
of sweets, flowers, rice, coconut, jaggery, and coins are made to God.
The statue is also anointed with red Chandan powder. Prayers are offered
to Lord Ganesh every day during the festival. Temples devoted to Lord Ganesh
also organize special events and prayers.
Those who have a Lord Ganesh statue in their house treat and care
for him as a much-loved guest.
Indian devotees celebrating the last day of the Ganesh Chaturthi (Lord
Ganesh festival) along the Yamuna river. On this final day of the festival,
thousands of plaster idols are immersed into bodies of water.
Why is the Lord Ganesh
Statues Immersed in Water at the End of the Festival?
Hindus worship idols, or statues, of their gods because it gives
them a visible form to pray to. They also recognize that the universe is in a
constant state of change.
Form eventually gives away to formlessness. However, the energy
still remains. The immersion of the statues in the ocean, or other bodies of
water, and subsequent destruction of them serves as a reminder of this belief.
It teaches that everything is temporary in life and that it's
sometimes necessary to let go of things we love.
