Buddha Purnima is the day
that is widely known for the birthday of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later
called Lord Gautama Buddha.
It was believed that
Gautama Buddha was born in 623 BC in the sacred area of Lumbini located in the
Terai plains of southern Nepal. In South and Southeast Asia, Buddha’s birthday
is celebrated as a part of Vesak(the day of the full moon in the month of
May).In India this year it is celebrated on 26 May.

and Traditions Across Different Countries
As we know Buddha Purnima
is celebrated in many Asian as well as Non-Asian countries. But different
countries celebrate this festival differently. For example:
· Nepal: Since Nepal is the birth country of Buddha, his
birthday is very sacredly celebrated there. People dress up in white clothing
and distribute kheer (rice pudding)as it is believed that a woman called
Sujata offered Gautama Buddha kheer on his birthday and since then it has
become a tradition.
· India: In India, people
prefer going to Buddhist temples and Monasteries and praying sutras for long
hours. People usually dress up in white clothes. People also avoid eating
non-vegetarian food on this sacred day. People also bathe statues of Buddha in
water and flowers.
· China: In China Buddha’s birthday is a national
holiday. People offer food like milk porridge to monks. They also dress in
white and visit temples. People light incense and indulge in long prayers and
pay their respects. People light lanterns which symbolizes Buddha’s
enlightenment.
Birth
and Life of Lord Buddha
Many people do not know this but the founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince. He was the son of Śuddhodana, the leader of the Shakya clan. At the time of his birth, a hermit ascetic called Asita predicted that Gautama Buddha will either become a holy man or a great king. To safeguard him from the harsh realities of life Buddha’s father never let him out of the palace. He sheltered him from human sufferings as well as religious teachings.
He grew within the walls
of the palace completely oblivious of the outside world. It is known that
Siddhartha got married at the age of 16 years to Yashodhara, princess of the koliyan kingdom. Soon afterword they had a son together named Rhula. Siddhartha
was 29 years old when he first saw the real world. He wanted to meet his
subjects, so he went outside the palace with his charioteer to meet them. On
this trip, he saw four things that taught him something.
First- An Old Man
(everyone grows old one day); Second- A Sick Man(anyone can become helpless);
Third-A Corpse(everyone has to die one day); Fourth-A holy man(someone can be
at peace amidst a suffering environment. After these life-altering realizations
Gautama Buddha decided to leave his luxurious life behind and go to the outside
world and change it. He left his wife, son, and kingdom behind in search of
salvation.
He wandered for quite
some time in search of a teacher who could teach him the secret of world peace
and making others happy. But he couldn’t find anyone. So, after experiencing
and learning many things for years he gave birth to Buddhism.
